Wanted tactical codes of aircraft in WWII. Who can help?

Wanted are the Tactical Codes of the aircraft, each aircraft of the US Army - Airfoce that served within the European Theater of Operations (ETO) was given an individual code and attached to the aircraft fuselage. Toward the End of the war, some units returning from the ETO to the Zone of Interior (ZI) retained their respective tactical markings from crossing from America to England until the Final decision was made on their future use within the USAAF. (Assignments Unit) The aircraft codes displayed on these aircraft were not the same as the tactical numbers a unit had received, respectively, while serving as an operational combat unit within the ETO, which is the code prior to reassignment to overseas service units. It is the earlier codes (pre-ETO) that I cannot identify and catalog. As the aircraft shown in the photo was in service with the USAAF/ETO at the time the photos were taken.

As an example, the B-24 Liberator, B-24 H-25-FO, Serial No. 42-95033, Marking EC-X, emergency landed at Altenrein on July 17, 1944, by the 8th Air Force, 392nd Bomb Group, 578 Squadron, launched in Wendling, England, with the mission to bomb Munich.  On the nose, you can clearly see the code No. 033 it had when flying over from America to England before being assigned to the 8th Air Force, 392nd Bomb Group, 578 Squadron. The problem is that in none of the research sources I know of so far is there an official entry on this subject. Many thanks for your help.
