The 250th birthday of the U.S. Army, June 14, 2025. Established on June 14, 1775, the Army is now 250 years old! Army aviation began with the Aeronautical Division of the U.S. Signal Corps on August 1, 1907. It became the United States Army Air Service in 1918 and then the Army Air Corps in 1926.On June 20, 1941, the U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) were established as a full, co-equal branch of the Army alongside the Ground Forces and Service Forces. Many still referred to it as the “Air Corps”, and the logistics and training branch kept that name, but officially, it was the USAAF for the entirety of World War II. At its peak in 1944, the USAAF had nearly 80,000 aircraft. In 1947, it became an independent service: the United States Air Force.
