During the Second World War, Switzerland was increasingly shaken by Allied bombing. Besides Schaffhausen, Stein am Rhein, Thayngen, Zurich, Oerlikon, Altdorf and Basel were also affected. Initially, the Swiss Army's air defenses continued to fire on planes that disregarded the border, but as tensions between the powers increased, these measures were curtailed. After the war, the United States apologized for the damage done and promised payments in the millions.
