The area and the surrounding streets were cordoned off on a large scale; commercial buildings and apartment blocks were evacuated. According to the cantonal police, experts from the Forensic Institute and military specialists defused the explosive device. First, a shed was built around the bomb using wood and sandbags; a helicopter had delivered the insulation material. At 17.00 a muffled bang could be heard, but this was to be expected during deactivation. Nobody was injured. After the bomb had been defused, the explosive device was quickly removed. At 5.30 p.m. the ambulance left the area and the waiting firemen removed their protective suits. According to the police, there was no longer any danger. The residents were soon able to return to their homes and the streets were also cleared. For technical reasons, the police cannot disclose exactly how the specialists disarmed the warhead. The warhead was defused on a sloping concrete ramp. What remained was a round wall of sandbags with splinters that looked like green glass. After the defused bomb was removed, the Aarau fire brigade waited next to the ramp with shovels in order to clean everything up. Live Bomb Stored at Police Stations The WWII sd2 fragmentation bomb was dropped off some time ago by a civilian at the Aargau Cantonal Police Laurenzenvorstadt Precinct and stored there temporarily without anyone noticing what a dangerous object it was. Weapons and ammunition are regularly transported to Buchs and the Cantonal Police Centre West by the police. There the material is sorted. It was not until its transport through the city of Aarau to Buchs that the WWII sd2 bomb was discovered to be live and dangerous.
