The Swiss Air Force in air combat with the German Air Force in May/June 1940. The air force shot down eleven German Air Force aircraft in air combat. Subsequently, the Reich government protested against the Swiss attacks on German aircraft on 6 June 1940. Germany demanded compensation and an apology from the Federal Council. In order to teach Switzerland a lesson, saboteurs were sent to Switzerland to carry out bomb attacks on the airports of Spreitenbach, Bözingen, Payerne and Lausanne between 10 pm and midnight on 16 June 1940. As a result of these measures taken by the big neighbour, General Guisan banned aerial combat in Swiss airspace until 1943
