The Singing Pilots – and a Village in Turmoil

Chewing gum and true love: US soldiers in Adelboden. During the Second World War, American internees lived in Adelboden. They brought excitement to the tranquil mountain village – and, for some, true love.

Loretta Gallo travelled to Frutigen with her daughter Pamela and other relatives to see the open-air theatre production ‘Singing Pilots’. This is because her family history is closely intertwined with it. Loretta Gallo’s father was the flight engineer: S/Sgt John Scott of the B-17F Battle Queen, which made an emergency landing in Utzenstorf on 17 August 1943.
